Our Services

What We Do

While our design will aim for minimal cost, the service we provide is anything but minimal. We have three governing objectives:

  1. satisfy the requirements of our client and associated consultants (civil engineer, surveyor & landscape architect)
  2. no delays - complete design and construction on time;
  3. lowest total cost of design and construction.

We do not simply churn out basic designs for the lowest possible fee. Far more is involved. Current research indicates that "poor quality design and documentation is estimated to cost 7% of total construction costs with rework in construction likely to be greater than 10% of total cost." (Australia's Cooperative Research Centre for Construction Coordination - QUT)

It can be very cost-effective to invest slightly more up-front on consultant's fees in order save a much greater amount in construction. We have evidence that the total cost of our jobs (i.e. design + construction) can be as much as 20 percent lower than our competitors achieve.

That is why we employ only highly-experienced designers - their average length of experience in the design of electricity reticulation and street lighting is over 20 years. Our full-time field inspectors were formerly supervisors with Energex- accredited contractors, so they understand construction issues thoroughly. Construction co-ordination and oversight is a service that many consultants in this field do not provide.

We have a comprehensive quality system which is certified by NCS International to comply with AS/NZS ISO 9001:2000. Our quality manual is not a broadly-based document, full of motherhood statements, like so many quality manuals. It focuses specifically on the work in which we specialise, i.e. The design and supervision of the installation of electricity reticulation and street lighting. All procedures are fully documented. Specific risks are explicitly addressed. The quality system is part of an integrated suite of management systems, which include Safety and Environmental Management.

Our computer system allows us to compile detailed lists of materials which must be purchased, catalogued by Energex stock code number. So clients purchase materials direct from Energex, instead of having the contractor supply them. This avoids the contractor's typical 15% oncost charge on the supply of materials - an "invisible" surcharge. The saving can be as much as one third of our fee.

Because of the quality of our designs, the co-ordination performed by our field officers, and the support we give contractors, our tenders attract the lowest prices. Contractors have told us that the prices they quote for our jobs are significantly lower than they quote for others.

Obviously, the total cost is usually lower when the contractor is selected through competitive tendering, than when a price is obtained from a design/construct contractor, with no detailed design upon which to base their price. An up-front total price for design and construct is certainly most convenient, but the buyer usually pays for this convenience. That is why we can usually beat design/construct prices.

Finally, our ongoing commitment to clients' interests has seen us confront Energex and councils on many occasions, when their demands or their service to developers have been unacceptable. Robin Russell's 44 years professional experience in the industry serves well in this regard.

So these are some of the reasons why we believe that we can get your project finished on time, at the lowest total cost.
